The past few days my Discords have been littered with drama what could be easily avoided if people realised that English is not their native language.
Stop thinking everyone by default is a native English speaker.
Politely correct people when need be. Don’t antagonise ESL people for not being completely and utterly fluent.
Agreed! My mother tongue is Chinese and I have been living in Malaysia and Singapore. While it seems like my English is decent, there are a lot of terms, tone, context, slangs in the English language that I don’t get.
This is the reason why I keep saying that I would like my English to be LESS good. As soon as you seem to speak properly, people who don’t know you instantly assume you’re English native speaker and reap you a new one at the first mistake.Â
I am a native speaker and if I notice anything wrong, I can politelty correct it in whispers if you want. Not to be rude, but to help you improve and learn. 🙂
